Healthy Food Access and Education

Globeville Summer Lunch Distribution - Argo Park - Summer 2016

In the summer of 2016, BirdSeed Collective's Food Program served 75 lunches/day for 3 months to anyone in need. Generous donors include Denver Office of Economic Development, CM Brooks, and Globeville Civic Partners. Our 2017 Goal: encourage other local stakeholders to donate time and/or resources.

Globeville Healthy Food Distribution Education & Preservation Program

Every Monday 3 PM at 4496 Grant St. Denver, CO, BirdSeed Collective's Food Program distributes healthy food to those in need. In 2016, 450 unduplicated participants with 970 additional household members took part. 48,534 lbs of food distributed, which amounts to 40,445 meals at a savings of $62,609 for the participants. 90% of participants are below below poverty level. This year (2017) 800 - 1000 lbs of food per hour are distributed to participants.

Last year as well 84 families were fed for Thanksgiving with turkeys and sides. Four residents were hired, including 2 youths, learning valuable job skills and provided with food and dessert.

Participants in the program learn food preservation, healthy recipes, juicing, health education, gain access to resources and weekly access to the distribution program and preservation.

Generous donors include Denver Food Rescue, Freshpack Produce, Rainbo Breads, Food Bank of the Rockies, and ACTS Food Bank. Funded by OED, Denver Foundation, and Denver Parks & Recreation.

 

Our 2017 Goal: Program will continue to become more self-sufficient, continue distributing healthy food, adding an in-depth food preservation education and an in-home herb garden program for participants.
