Globeville Community Meeting, Summer Mix, GrowHaus Block Party
BirdSeed Collective has been busy this summer. Along with various public mural projects, free summer lunch and herb garden distributions, and art shows at Alto Gallery and the Sports Castle, BirdSeed members have been engaged in various community-driven activities around the city.
In June, BirdSeed members, Globeville residents, and city representatives came together at the Globeville Recreational Center to discuss the fate of the center and brainstorm ways of improving access and programming. BirdSeed is a front-runner among groups seeking to manage the center in 2018. Selection process is currently underway.
In July, BirdSeed's Executive director Anthony Garcia hosted free painting sessions at Denver's 16th St Mall as part of the Downtown Denver Partnership's Summer Mix series. Local youths collaborated with Garcia on a series of abstract paintings reminiscent of his well-known mural works.
In August, BirdSeed member Tom Scharfenberg participated in the GrowHaus's annual block party in Elyria-Swansea. Visitors were treated to tours of the non-profit indoor farm, homemade Mexican food and refreshments, dancing from a local matachines group, and various information and crafts booths. Tom operated a booth that allowed visitors to decorate their own shopping bags made from recycled t-shirts.
